Heart Sick by Monica James (Heart Memory Transfer, book one)–Review

Monica (middle name) James, what have you done to me? Silly me, thinking this was just about an organ transplant. It is, but it is so much more than that. Heart Sick is the first book in the Heart Memory Transfer Duet. In this book, we are introduced to Dutch and Luna but be advised this one does end on a cliffy.

Monica is just one of those authors for me that I can’t wait to scarf up every little word that she writes. Heart Sick was no exclusion to this, except for having to finish another ARC first. Dutch and Luna have claimed my heart like no other. From the first sentence, I was sucked in and completely invested in Luna’s pain. I felt like I had to read faster, so I could finally take a breath after realizing I was holding my breath.

Dutch is another beast and the emotions that were written for him were also all-encompassing. As a fellow music lover/music major/performer, I can completely relate to the music is his life and in his soul concept. He is a complex character with many different facets, which make him the perfect Hero.

Heart Sick is over the top, dark, unethical, insidious, and psychologically twisted. The twists and turns, the storyline, and the need for these two to catch a break are overwhelming. I cannot wait for book two to come. There are so many questions I have that need to be answered. I NEED to find out how Dutch and Luna’s story is resolved. Full disclosure: I’m giving this book 4.5 stars. I loved it, but the ending was a little rushed/off, thus, preventing me from giving 5 stars.

Whoa!! I have fallen down the rabbit hole and am still shooketh!! From the get-go, there is a scene with ‘trigger warning’ written all over it and yet it somehow pulled me in deeper throughout the pages.

Monica and Michelle certainly did not hold back on their writing. This book is dark, gritty, straight in your face with no chance of hiding, yet there was something internally that I found myself silently rooting and squealing the main characters on. It felt wrong. It made me question myself, but most of all, it made me wonder where Monica has been hiding this side of her writing? (I believe I should thank Michelle for that)!

Crybaby is not an easy read. There are topics discussed and executed creating a strong visceral reaction and despite some topics that are mentioned, I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t walk away and wondered what would happen next. I HAD TO keep reading.

I found myself with absolutely zero in common with these protagonists, but I was definitely drinking the Kool-Aid and couldn’t turn my back on them and walk away. Rev and Darcie (aka…Bonnie and Clyde, Ken and Barbie, or the Lonely-Hearts killers) have had unfathomable things happen to them. You realize that you can only push someone so far before they break, well we got to read about that side after the break. All I have to say is, Monica and Michelle MUST keep writing together! Is it too early ladies to ask for more??😉😁

Monica and Michelle are the newest power duo, and their writing style is wicked, dark, imperfect, and not for those faint of heart, but a must-read! (Michelle and Monica do you hear it now? (must have more, Must Have More, MUST HAVE MORE)!!

Somebody Else’s Shadow by Monica James–Book Review

I am never underwhelmed when it comes to Monica, her writing, or her storytelling capabilities. I knew from the first page that this book was going to be special. The mental imagery that she can paint is nothing short of fantastic. I could visualize myself sitting on that tree swing and smelling the lake air, feeling the breeze on my face, seeing the bright color saturation, and tasting the vibrancy of lemons.

Books that deal with amnesia can be a wild card. There usually is a reason as to why someone has lost their memory, but the scary part is what will they find in the process to get it back. In this instance, Peyton Lane has no recollection of her life prior to a car accident six months earlier. As much as people want to help, nothing feels right. She’s heard the stories and has seen pictures, but things are not clicking until she notices Cayden Coachman. Cayden is the first person where she’s felt a quivering in her belly. The problem is that she doesn’t know why.

Somebody Else’s Shadow is not your typical boy/girl/amnesia story. It is so much more. There are twists and turns, and then there are Monica James’s amnesiac twists and turns. Just when I thought I might have an inkling of where this story would go, it did a sharp right and splintered off further.

I highly recommend reading Somebody Else’s Shadow. It’s powerful, impactful, thrilling gut-wrenching, and cry-inducing. Hey, Monica, prime merch opportunity, a tissue box/tissues with ‘Monica James, creator of tears, and a shoulder to cry on’ printed on the side.’
