Beyond The Roses by Monica James–Review

Beyond the Roses was one of my most anticipated reads this year, yet, when it came time to sit down and read it, I was scared. I had heard all the hype and had read the blurb almost a million times and I wanted it. No, I needed this book in my life, but was afraid of what Monica is going to pull out of me. I finally found the courage to dig in after supplies were sufficiently stocked. You know the usuals, tissues, chocolate, and a drink, particularly a rum and soda.

BTR is everything you have ever hoped to achieve in writing/reading a book. The character development was beyond anything I have read. The storyline flowed from beginning to end with ease and Monica’s plotline was top notch. While reading, it was evident that she did her research and did this well, because the first tear fell at 5% (approximately).

These characters, Roman, Lola, Sadie, June, and others were gripping and real. I was so invested into these characters, that I was one of them. I could feel everything they were going through, everything they were experiencing and everything fearful of what might happen, because I have been there and could empathize. As I am sitting there bawling my eyes out, I still had hope that things would turn out well for the gang. The closer I got to ‘The End’, the more emotionally invested I had become. I felt my world splintering into a million pieces with the hope that I will be fixed at the end. Let me just say, I do not know if I will ever be ok again. Beyond the Roses, has set a new gold standard for future books. You know, those books that want to make you feel. The ones that stir up all kind of emotions. It has been three days since I read BtR and I am still shedding a few tears. Monica James has emotionally and spiritually changed me, and I am ok with that.

As I mentioned earlier, Beyond the Roses revolves around Lola Van Allen and Dr. Roman Archibald. They develop a relationship that may be unconventional but is perfect for them. As time passes, they realized that they have found ‘their person’ that fills their heart perfectly. Two individuals who have become one.

Lola is a 25-year-old, who has decided to spend her summer at camp named Strawberry Fields, where she will be a camp counselor. Without going into detail, let me just say, that this is where she needs to be. Where she feels, she would be the most needed and wanted.

“Never underestimate your impact on the world. You just may be someone’s reason for living”.

Dr. Roman Archibald, (insert water works), is the staff physician at the camp, while working at a hospital as well. He feels that his life’s work is to work and keep himself busy. Out of everyone, he is the person that I found was the most emotionally invested. He had a horrible amount of weights on his shoulders and a wall eclipsed so high that even a pole jumper could not reach the top. Roman has his own individual story and it was delightful to see this big guy fall.

Beyond the Roses is so much more than an emotional dirty bomb that is thrown in your lap waiting to go off and fill your life with the emotions of the character/situation. It is about love. A rare love found in the most unconventional places. The acceptance of situations and surroundings, despair, sacrifice and most notably hope.

“I would rather live a day being loved by Roman, than live a lifetime without him by my side.”

I feel like I need to apologize. I feel and fear, that no matter what I write, it will never be enough to express the greatness and multitude of emotions that bounce off the pages when reading Beyond the Roses. I will reiterate, you will need Kleenex and something comforting to you, whether that be a blanket, a pet, or a special reading area. Monica James has not only hit this one out of the park, but she has also won the Super Bowl and effortlessly raised the Stanley cup above her head after winning. This one will truly stay with you and permanently take up residence within your soul!

“Lead with your heart…and you’ll find me. Always.”

This book is not for everyone and I get that I really do, but if there is one book that you should take a chance on, I believe, this is the one. Roman and Lola’s story is not one you would easily forget.

***PS…I really thought I was going to make it through this whole review without crying. WRONG! I read a passage I had highlighted and, BAM, instant crying.

BEYOND THE ROSES

My Review

To the outside world, my life is perfect.

I’m young and rich, and some may even say I’m beautiful. But I would give anything to be somebody else because after being extraordinary all my life, all I wish for is…silence.

My name is Lola Van Allen, and there’s no easy way to say it, but…I’m dying.

When my doctors reveal all hope is lost, I decide to spend the time I have left sharing my experience at Strawberry Fields, a summer camp for terminally ill children. No matter my fate, I yearn to make a difference.

Things are quiet and slow-moving until I meet him.

Dr. Roman Archibald.

From the moment our lives entwine, he pushes me until breaking point. But for someone who has nothing left to lose, I push back twice as hard. Roman challenges me in ways I never imagined, revealing things aren’t always what they seem.

This is my story…and how I got a second chance at life.

Blowback by Monica James–Review

The Monsters Within Duet deserves something special to be said about it. Quick refresher, I absolutely loved, adored and salivated for Bullseye. Ms. James wrote something exceptional with book one. So, the question is, ‘How do you follow up with such perfection of Bullseye?’ Simple. You write a kick*ss, soul encompassing, gut twisting, emotionally sucking book two. Welcome to Blowback.

Now, Blowback picks up right where it left off in Bullseye. The intensity, passion and of course, the dark and twisted all remain. Monica did a fantastic job of engulfing you into the dark, seedy, twisted underground of Detroit. It was easy to not only feel as if you were there, but to visualize the story happening around you almost as if you were experiencing everything in Virtual Reality.

Bull and Tiger are an intriguing pair of emotionally stunted individuals who have had to learn hard life lessons and most importantly, a human representation of yin yang. Each have issues, but one thing they do know is that a certain calm flows through them when they are together. They are electric and able to soar when they are together, yet when apart they fall flat and are left to keep the demons at bay the only way they know how. Bull and Tiger not only make an insane coupling, but they are the piece missing to make each other whole (with a little Fluffball thrown in😉).

Bull…Bull is still this fierce mastermind, enigmatic, anti-hero with thoughts of revenge. Lily is caring, kind and sees the best in people. She receives an awakening of sorts and then we get to see Tiger Lily at her fiercest. The things that she would do for the ones she loves made her strong, fierce and a true kick*ss heroine. I loved to see the expansion of her personality and the fierce heart she has inside.

Although, non-conventional, their love, friendship and relationship are what one dreams about. Who needs Prince Charming when you have the Black Knight riding through town to save not only his one true love, but the person who saved him?

I am completely addicted to Monica James and her writing style. Her heroes are broken yet fierce. The heroines seem to evolve and find themselves. Tiger completely fit the bill with her rough and tough tenacity, sweet nature and finally, her ferociousness. Bull and Tiger will be a couple that will not leave my mind very soon. I’ve laughed, cried, screamed, and pulled a tantrum having to step away from my kindle. Yet, overall, though, I loved. I loved fiercely with a consistent storyline, all plot holes and questions answered, characters that were so much more than one-dimensional and most importantly, I loved Bull, Tiger and Jordy. These characters will not leave my psyche for an exceptionally long time!! Congratulations, Ms. James, on a fabulous book!!

Chasing the Butterflies by Monica James– Review

”An epic love story of two broken people who battled against all odds and found love…”

We all read books for different reasons. Humor to decrease the gravity of a bad day. Psychological thriller to scare you, Drama, because sometimes it’s always nice to read about somebody else’s drama rather than your own in real life. But what happens if you read a book and have no idea why you’re reading it, yet it fills you up so completely that you didn’t know you were missing something? Chasing the Butterflies is that kind of book for me. I really didn’t know what I was getting into when reading it, but I read the blurb and was instantly intrigued.

What happens when four little words changes your whole life? Victoria (Tori) gets to experience the joy of hearing her boyfriend say, ‘Will you marry me’. For both parties, it is an extremely emotional experience, however, this feeling is overshadowed by a horribly tragic event in her life. Through this event, Tori meets Jude and there is an instant connection, a tethering of two souls to each other. The roller coaster ride that Tori and Jude take you on is utterly magical. This power couple will always have a piece of my heart.

I’m writing this review the next morning and I am still overwhelmed with emotions. CTB is unlike anything I have ever read. I cried (a lot) while reading and even through the end of the day yesterday. CTB was a cleansing experience. There are twists and turns that will not only come out of nowhere but will make you go back a little and re-read to make sure you read it right.

Monica James is a wizard when it comes to words and her writing. Chasing the Butterflies was ethereal and hauntingly beautiful. She will make you believe in true love and soulmates. The plot line is enormously devastating, yet you will believe that love wins in the end. I wish that I could completely express how much I loved this book, but I fear I could never truly do it justice. I will say one thing I learned was, if you stay true to who you are and what you believe in, love will always win.

“Don’t hide who you are, butterfly.” “Why butterfly?” “Because I can’t wait to watch you spread your wings and fly.”

Tori and Jude are the main characters in this story, but by mentioning how great they are, I need to do a little nod to the secondary characters. Particularly Angus and Charley. Angus, oh my heavens, Angus. Adorable, charming, scene stealer, sweetheart and completely loveable. You will love reading about this little man. Charley is the perfect sidekick with some much-needed comedy relief.

Ms. James left me sobbing, wrecked, emotionally drained, slightly off kilter and completely and totally in love with her and her book. A true ‘Best of 2019’ book that deserves a lot more than 5 stars. If you have never read a Monica James book, truly, do yourself a favor and read this one. It will be a life altering read.

“It’s been said the simple flutter of a butterfly’s wing can cause chaos halfway across the world.”

Honorable Mention Quotes:

“The butterflies.” “I know you felt them…because I felt them, too.”

“I want you to know that. No one has ever fought for me. I was never someone’s reason to live. Thank you for making me yours.”

“He doesn’t make me feel different—he makes me feel special.”
